ICON and Lake|Flato Architects have produced one of the best examples, to date of a 3D printed structure that not only looks cool but also addresses current environmental technologies in architecture. Icon CEO and Co-Founder, Jason Ballard, claims that the curvilinear, organic shapes of “House Zero” cost the same to produce, as traditional linear walls. In addition, they have a R value of 40 and they are structurally stronger. House Zero is a 2,000+ sq. ft. home with a 350 sq. ft. dwelling unit. The walls are comprised of a cementitious-based material, “Lavacrete,” insulation, and reinforced steel.
